New paper on the hydrology of Greenland firn aquifer
January 22, 2026
Our new paper studies the seasonal hydrology of the year‐round, water‐bearing layers within the Greenland firn, which has been identified since 2011 due to climate warming.
Paper highlights:
Our simulations suggest that the total volume of aquifer recharge in a season can be predicted from an analytical subsurface energy balance
However, predictions of aquifer recharge timing and the vertical distribution of refreezing require detailed simulations
Melt intermittency forms precursor ice lenses, potentially altering the partitioning between local refreezing, surface runoff, and recharge
